Crysis 2 has done an amazing thing here. It's a sequel that while borrowing heavily from the first Crysis, plays out absolutely nothing like it and creates its own standalone experience. While most FPS like CoD series or Halo do improve in each iteration, this is one of the few games that dramatically enhances its previous installment. This is the new FPS, the thinking man's FPS, and I can't wait to get my second playthrough started.

This illusion doesn't hold up well indoors or in some of the more linear parts of the game, but when Crysis 2 opens up there's this process of discovery that's truly impressive. I played through levels multiple times and still found new pathways and tactical options I hadn't noticed before.

Crysis 2 is one of those games that you just have to stop and stare at every now and then. Water, smoke, and flames all look fantastic. There's an emphasis on lighting as glare shines through windows, and you'll witness huge structures collapsing regularly. Characters look more natural than the leather-faced protagonists of the first game, although some do look better than others.
