Fight Night Champion also tracks in-game achievements among your friends list for things like most consecutive wins, and you also get pop-ups letting you know when important fighters (like title holders) are also online. It’s all incredibly easy to use and is everything you could want in an online boxing game.

One of the biggest, and most appreciated, changes is the toning down of the training mini-games. In story mode, you hit the bag every great once in a while but you aren’t required to lift weights and run laps in twitch-reaction style as you might expect. Legacy mode seems to have toned down the amount of time spent in the gym as well, with quite a few non-interactive training choices. Thank goodness.

Fight Night Champion is almost two games in one, because the Champion mode doesn’t take away anything from the core Legacy mode from past games. The revamped career mode features an updated training regime and pre-fight scheduling. Like in the ring, survival and success is a matter of managing your stamina. Cash-generating sponsorship events, marketing opportunities for increasing your fighter’s popularity, pre-fight training, and even injuries must be managed in the days and weeks leading up to your next fight. Pack your schedule with too many activities, and you might enter your next bout with the tank half-empty.

Fight Night Champion wouldn’t be complete without an online component. Round 4’s Online World Championship as well as Ranked/Unranked matches are back in this entry, but EA Canada also brought a new feature called Online Gyms. In it, players will get to create their own custom boxer, create or join existing gyms to fight other users and play a full season which will be concluded with a tournament. Additionally, gym owners can start rivalries and challenge themselves for experience points, bragging rights and an increased rank on the World Gym Leaderboards. Quick note, the same character skill progression system from the offline Legacy mode is also available online. See it as another opportunity to earn additional XP and improve your boxer. Unfortunately, online servers weren’t active as of this writing and I’m basically describing what players can expect when the game launches on March 1st. We’ll get back to it and bring you our impressions at another time.
