GRID: Autosport’s success hinges on getting handling exactly right, and Codemasters went about this very meticulously. They started with real world values, and then collating data from videos, and actually got into the cars 1sthand. The end result? They captured the character of each car in-game, and not just the raw data.

If GRID Autosport is to be the last major racer on the PS3/360 then it is seriously going out in style. If you haven’t ditched your old systems yet, then make sure you pick this up, strap in and enjoy one of the best racers in years.

For me Grid Autosport was a strange game to review. Honestly, I didn’t like it at first. I thought they were just pandering to all the whiners that thought GRID 2 was an abomination just because it had no cockpit view. Don’t get me wrong, they ARE pandering, but in a good way. Longtime Codemasters fans should be very happy with Autosport being a throwback to the good old days. Personally, that’s my issue though; it’s a throwback, not its own thing. GRID, and to a greater extent its sequel, had a certain style and agency that Autosport lacks in comparison. That and the career progression prevent this game from being brilliant. Ultimately though, GRID Autosport is a consistently satisfying, intense and rewarding game, one that I can’t wait to continue playing.

GRID Autosport is a return to a more serious game after the street-centric GRID 2, but it still falls short in some key areas. Fortunately, while the graphics disappoint in some ways, the gameplay doesn’t. The GRID series has been know for providing some really fun and intense over the past half-decade and Autosport continues that tradition proudly. It’s kind of hard to recommend this as a $60 purchase, but if you loved either GRID game before, you’ll enjoy GRID Autosport – just be prepared for a visual shock to the senses when you see how bland the menus look.

None of this means that GRID Autosport is a terrible game, but that it is really only for a select group of people out there. Causal racing fans looking to simply mess around with their dream cars will find more tension here than it is really worth to get what you want out of the game. But, hardcore racing fans who have no concept of repetition being a bad thing, will find the game’s 22 different locations and five very diverse race types an interesting departure from the status quo.

Career mode is the title’s main attraction, and it’s not all about finishing in a podium place. Instead, the game encourages gradual improvement over multiple seasons of races, rather than forcing you to win in order to move on. This goes hand-in-hand with the accessible handling model, as the title facilitates your personal progression. There’s plenty of variety on display, too, with different racing styles such as touring, street, and endurance all available for you to try. It’ll certainly keep you busy for some time – assuming that you haven’t seen it before.
