Mass Effect 2 is populated with some of the most engaging, well-acted space people you could hope to meet, and the script has been carefully designed to make clunking non-sequiturs a vanishingly rare occurrence. As you tour planets and space stations, assembling a crack team of galaxy saviours and meeting all manner of strange and sometimes sexy aliens, you'll also find endless sidequests and subplots to get drawn into. Even if you don't choose to take most of them on, their very existence helps to bolster the idea of the Mass Effect world as a functioning universe.

Mass Effect 2 is such a story- and character-driven experience, I won’t give away to many story details out of fear of ruining anything for anyone who may not have played the game. Players assume the role of Commander Shepard, a decorated soldier and an individual widely heralded as the hero of humanity. Shepard isn’t your ordinary game hero / heroine but instead the work of your own creation.

Gameplay is organized into recruiting missions, loyalty missions (one for each teammate) and story missions. You’ll spend most of your time dealing death to baddies in typical cover based shooter fashion, with a tasty layer of RPG on top. Upon starting up, you’ll pick a basic character type and earn experience points to level up your unique abilities – basically, the sci-fi version of spells that you’ll cast in battle. It’s fast and frenetic, with plenty of “hacking” mini-games, character interaction, and the occasional boss fight to keep things moving.

I've just 2300 or so words gushing about everything from my love of space to the best DLC seen thus far in video games, but the bottom line is this: if you do not buy Mass Effect 2, you're missing out on a game so good that it could (and honestly should) be in contention for Game of the Year again, a year after it already took so many high honors. It is, without a doubt, the deepest, most inviting world created thus far, going farther and growing more expansive than almost any medium available. It's immensely replayable, offers a story and characters that are all genuinely interesting and... just stop reading this and go buy the game already, will ya?
