The ultimate aim in the ongoing PES series is to match what people see when they go to a match or watch a big game on TV with what they experience on their console. Konami has been trying for a few years now to regain its past glory, will this be the one?

This year’s PES title won’t change anyone’s mind about the series. It hasn’t gotten any less complex, but it also hasn’t lost any of its brilliance. In that sense, its success is all its own.

Similarly the players will often come to you with gripes – maybe they’re unhappy at being dropped or in a sulk because they want the number 10 shirt – and it’s your job to balance priorities and keep everyone happy.

If you haven’t played a soccer game for a few years, I would recommend that you check out PES 2012 because it offers both a sturdy single-player and multiplayer engine that has a considerably amount of longevity and replay value. The highlight is the innovative control system that gives you some amazing control of the soccer ball as you kick your way to victory!

Is het eindelijk zover? Is het eindelijk zover, dat Pro Evolution Soccer 2012 zijn grootste concurrent FIFA 12 van de troon af zal stoten? Konami gaat het in ieder geval weer proberen.

To put it frankly, unless you are some die-hard, old school fan of Pro Evolution Soccer, save your pennies and stick with FIFA. PES 2012 isn’t a terrible game at all, but head-to-head, it’s not the one controlling the ball; it puts on a show that your little brother might like. A solid simulation of the sport, PES 2012 is a good addition to the franchise. With a few tweaks, PES could return next year as one of the best soccer games available. For now, it will have to settle as just being a pretty good one.

But for all of its glaring eccentricities, PES 2012’s emphasis on fast-flowing attacking football over stodgy defensive play is still capable of winning us over. It might not provide the degree of true simulation that some players hanker after, and some of its tweaks merely throw up new problems – but PES fans have had a long time to get used to frustrating inconsistency.

It’s encouraging then to see Konami at least taking steps in the right direction with the PES series, and whilst it’s a good few generations behind FIFA at this point, it’s important to remember that this is a series that’s individual in its own right. Simply put, PES 2012 plays an extremely entertaining brand of football, largely sweeping away the complaints of the two previous versions in the process. There are problems for sure, but it’s nice to know that whichever of the football titans you choose this year, you’ll get a decent result.

Amid all my talk of evolution, there’s something refreshing in PES about seeing its creator’s hand. Some of the quirks I could easily write off as negatives imbue the game with a kind of personality and organic feel that’s uncommon among sports games. No two matches — even between the same teams — ever feel quite the same, and it’s that element of surprise that just might, at least offline, make Pro Evolution my go-to soccer game this season.
