Various life factors have kept me from finishing the review as soon as I would have liked to. The upside of that is that I've had some time to get some distance from the game and reflect upon my experience with it. As I stated in the lead of the review I had a very strong bias against the game and after playing it I can say that I did enjoy my second trip to Rapture as the game provided a lot more history about the world than the first did and broke some new ground. To be honest I'm uncomfortable about how much I enjoyed the game as there are a few plot holes and a few things that don't make a lot of sense upon reflection. The game is worth your time if you're a fan or the original and there's not denying the quality of the Bioshock 2. It's just a matter of question if this is the kind of thing you want to reward with your money or not.

Overall, Bioshock 2 is an all-inclusive game package that should not be missed out on. The thrilling single player lives up to the standards originally set by the predecessor and the addition of a very strong multiplayer takes Bioshock 2 to another level. It may be too soon to call Game of the Year, but Bioshock 2 is certainly a contender and a very strong one at that.

On top of everything else, BioShock 2 adds a surprisingly good multi-player component. Sure, it's totally unnecessary, but a neat little perk system and the chance to finally wield plasmids against friends make it worth checking out. If this addition had taken anything away from the solo campaign's quality, I'd be the first one to deride it. But BioShock 2's story mode has been so expertly polished, I can forgive 2K for wanting a piece of Modern Warfare 2's pie. If I can find any fault in my return to Rapture, it'd only be that some of the magic and romance is gone. It's simply an unfortunate and inherent trait of sequels that they can't quite recapture their predecessor's sense of awe. Still, despite the familiarity, 2K Marin has done a phenomenal job making Rapture relevant again. A thrilling story, inspired new characters and environments, refined gameplay and yes, even the multi-player, make diving back into the Atlantic an easy decision.

Aurally, the sounds of the city are just as pleasing. Garry Schyman is once again at the helm, and hasn't failed in his duty to deliver an exhilarating and familiar ride through Rapture. Having worked on the original BioShock, and won numerous awards might I add, there was never going to be another person for the job. There isn't a moment he can't capture – and the score in BioShock 2 will evoke a large number of emotions from you, completing the experience.

The general gameplay style will be familiar and easy to master for those who have played the original, and anyone who hasn’t will be able to pick it up quite easily if they have ever played any shooter in which you can dual-wield. Plasmids and weapons can now be used at the same time, and all of them have been given major upgrades. Higher level plasmids can even be “charged” by holding down the trigger for a short while, and deliver a massive (sometimes multiple-enemy) wallop once released. The most formidable enemy in the game is the Big Sisters themselves, who appear randomly with the sole intent of wiping the floor with your big metal ass. Although she feels a bit “thrown in for good measure,” the Big Sister encounters deliver the panic-laden jollies you seek from the series.

A few other things in the game have been given an update over the original, the most notable of these being the hacking mini game. The pipe-swapping hacking game of BioShock has been replaced with a reflex-based game that has you stopping a moving needle within a safe zone. In addition to the safe zone there are smaller bonus zones that will give you a free item if you hit them during a successful hack as well as alarm zones that will instantly set off an alarm if you hit them. Some may miss the puzzle-based nature of the old hacking game, but one thing that the new one has going for it is that it's a lot faster to complete. I remember sometimes bypassing a vending machine in BioShock simply because I didn't want to take the time to play the hacking game. The hacking game was so much quicker in BioShock 2, that I think that I stopped to hack every machine in the game.

The real question here is simple: is this game better than the original? The easy answer would be no, as the story just does not feel as strong this time around and the core characters lack the same level of charisma. However, you are still getting a game that is streets ahead of most other titles in terms of plot and suspense, not to mention the fact you now have a very good multiplayer arena to dabble in. It may not be challenging the likes of Modern Warfare 2 for multiplayer supremacy anytime soon, but it is still plenty of fun and strives to do something a little different. This is a game that further delves into the great world of Rapture and is a more than worthy purchase. Now would you kindly do yourself the service of playing it!

Don't misunderstand me, now. This here adventure might sound like Rapture has become the go-see destination for another money-grubbin’ franchise hawkin' fantastic cruises an' wondrous sights. No worries there, though. Up yonder is a city where the great chain o' progress will always be twisted, an' where hell has put on the ritz. No place for a vacation unless you're fixin' to find the great hereafter. But if you're lookin' for a show and you're stuck here anyways, Rapture is gooder'n grits

BioShock 2 is a unique FPS and it definitely still stands out from most of its peers. The fantastic setting and light RPG elements really pull you in, and the customizations, challenging game play and new online multiplayer modes will keep you coming back for more. It's definitely worth it to book a trip back to Rapture.

Bioshock 2 has been faced with adversity since its conception and come out on top. The story feels disconnected and isn’t as strong as its predecessor but the gameplay has been improved upon for a much more enjoyable and fluid combat system. The art of protecting the Little Sister’s is a fantastic new element that encourages tactics and experimentation, and Rapture is just as fun to explore as before

Unfortunately we've been unable to try the multiplayer content in BioShock 2 as the code supplied to us from 2K simply didn't include it, nor were we likely to come across too many people playing the game online several days before the release. So stay tuned shortly for a summary of this content. Naturally, we reserve the right to change our score should it drastically change our impression of the game.

In a world where sequels almost never do better than their originals, BioShock 2 does an impressive job of holding its own. While the game gets some substantial and much-needed improvements in game design and combat controls, the environments, situations, and overall story seems to take a hit. I was never sucked into the experience like the first game, but there is certainly enough new and original material here to please existing fans and perhaps attract some new ones.

The star of the game though is undoubtedly the setting, and though I’ve enjoyed Bioshock 2 a lot less than the first game I am pretty sure that if 2K have got a third game in mind, I’ll be unable to resist the temptation to go back to Rapture once more.
