Not only is it the best representation of F1 to date, it's a game that accurately simulates its chosen subject matter as well as the best of sports titles. Whatever racing bug they've got at Codemasters it's a darn good one to catch. Bravo. Insert corny pun about being in pole position here.

Codemasters has successfully created a game that both of us are happy with - a game that has options and sliders to accommodate all types of player. Is this the best F1 game this generation? Without a doubt, and it's the biggest advancement the license has seen for a very long time.

The game has a frankly obscene amount of content to discover, all of it measured and absorbing. Whether the more arcadey difficulty levels will be entertaining enough for casual racing fans is debatable. You'll undoubtedly get the most out of it if you have the patience to approach it as a serious racer and learn to use gears, brakes and progressive throttle. But then, 'if' is a very long word in F1...

The only other significant criticism is F1 2010's damage system. While crashes in the game can verge on the spectacular and cars going airborne is handled more convincingly than in the likes of Forza 3 and NFS: Shift, we couldn't help but feel that Codies had the chance to go a touch further on the damage modelling. Front wings appear to be the only piece of bodywork liable to damage, while particularly big crashes might lose you a wheel or two and result in retirement. It's decent enough for a first attempt but we're certainly hoping for more detail when Codemasters Birmingham releases its next F1 game. Fingers crossed that'll be next year...

With hard work, though, comes great reward. Teams have realistic expectations from you, so even a mid-position qualification place or securing a solitary point can be hugely fulfilling. As we found with DiRT 2, Codemasters are great at injecting personality into driving titles too. Attending press conferences and interviews, exploring the paddock area and in-team competition between drivers makes it one of the first F1 games to make players feel like a driver rather than a car.

Are these the only downfalls to the game? Yes, it is the only downfall. Potentially some fans will expect F1 2010 to be a Gran Turismo for F1 racing; that's not going to happen. Codemasters intended this game to be all about F1 racing, no more/no less. It covers the sport quite well and pretty much secures itself as the sole niche' in the American market for an F1 racer. It doesn't want to be a broad racing game depending solely on names and car brands; rather it wants to capture the F1 essence. I can guarantee you that it has capture that essence.

That enjoyment is further continued when you take your skills online. As expected there are leaderboards for the time trial modes but you can also take part in single races or multiple grands prix. There is a shed full of options for any host to create a party and generally the races I participated in were lag free. One thing that will never change in online racing games is the first corner of doom. There’s nothing worse that knowing while you’re going down the straight, you’re about to get pummelled from the other cars that are behind you. While this can be fun it does drive me insane the majority of the time.

Regardless, it's the on-track action that defines F1 2010. It's clearly been Codemasters' main focus. In bringing Formula One back to HD consoles, the racing veterans have created a robust and at times thrilling game that effortlessly slips into pole position ahead of this generation's other F1 efforts. Perhaps even more exciting, however, is what F1 2010 hints at for the future. This is just the beginning. Formula One is back.

F1 2010 is easily the best Grand Prix game since Geoff Crammond was on the beat. Its driving is second to none and is brought alive by a dynamic weather system, while its racing is as thrilling as the real thing. It’s an exacting take by a team that clearly understands what makes F1 tick, and while a handful of issues hold it back from challenging Forza and Gran Turismo just yet, for now racing fans can rest assured that the world's fastest sport is in safe hands.

Combining ease of use both on and off the track is the key to why this game stands out. I can’t say that either aspect of the game is the most involved you are going to see, but simply having interviews and team objectives is great for a season-based racing game. Couple that with accessible racing and an eye towards realism, and Codemasters finally delivers an F1 game everyone can enjoy.

The fundamental point is that in every other regard F1 2010 can consider itself champion material. The best F1 season in years deserves the best F1 game in years – thankfully, that's exactly what it's got.

F1 2010 is an extremely accomplished game, which blends enthusiast-level nerdiness seamlessly with an admirable playability, and even if it is a little on the brutal side, it deserves its place on the podium of great driving simulators.

There is certainly room for improvement here, but importantly the key features all work better than most would have dared to have hoped. Certainly it seems brave of Codemasters to attempt such a serious simulation (there's not even a proper quick race option) but that courage has paid off handsomely with the best pure motorsports game in over.

The physics and weather effects are phenomenal, the courses are for the most part accurately represented and the racing is second-to-none, but for everything the game does right, it fails to liven things up between races. It fails to give you a reason to race, other than to set another best lap-time, meaning, that it quickly descends into monotonous repetition. Yes, we understand that’s what F1 is like, but when you tease players with what’s behind the looking glass, be prepared to deliver on that promise. That being said, as an F1 racer, it doesn’t do much wrong. As an F1 experience though? No, certainly not this year.
