Drake was always a very rounded person, largely thanks to North, whose light touch is always perfectly mapped to the emotional contours of the game's peerless in-engine story sequences, but he is now a much more rounded videogame character. As well as crawling and leaping between foot and handholds, swinging from ropes and bars and moving intuitively between cover points firing pistols, shotguns, rifles and other weapons, he can also fire one-handed while dangling, and employ a range of stealth takedowns, lurking behind walls and hanging from ledges to haul enemies into long drops or immobilise them with choke-holds.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is a simply stunning game. It's a cinematic adventure that has you hooked from start to finish. The dynamic cutscenes mean the non-stop action flows seamlessly from one breathtaking set-piece to the next, and the script, acting, and characters are some of the best Gamestyle have encountered. We defy anyone not to enjoy their time spent as Nathan Drake.

The connection between play and plot continues with Naughty Dog’s exceptional sense of pacing. There’s a pulsating rhythm to Among Thieves, oscillating between thunderous set pieces and more considered platform-puzzle sections, with the two often clashing brilliantly in the middle. And for a game that’s nominally about climbing and shooting, Among Thieves manages to push the level of action-adventure convention without breaking a sweat. Among the crumbling, tower-blocks of a conflict torn Nepalese city, Drake carries a wounded comrade on his shoulder.

If the original Drake’s Fortune was a visually stunning game, then Uncharted 2 is visually mind blowing even despite a 720p native resolution! It is not a “same scene drawn and repeated” type game either as you are taken to so many different locations you will not see the same thing twice. The detail on both small scale and large scale is tremendous. The vistas are breathtaking and the detail to the smallest of items is meticulous.

What more can be said? This game is spectacular, featuring hours of fun and the visual splendor of a Michael Bay movie (only without the horrendous dialog, cheesy slow motion, or racially insensitive humor). It’s not a truly perfect game, but the exceptional combination of frantic action and exquisite art directions make it close enough. This isn’t just the best game released this year, or even the best Playstation 3 game yet, it’s one of the best games released during this generation of consoles. Stop reading this and go buy it: adventure awaits.

Even after the single-player campaign is over there's an inclination to play it all over again, which is something we can't say about the vast majority of games. But the addition of online multiplayer modes is likely to keep Uncharted 2 sitting in PS3's for a long time. We're slightly disappointed that the game doesn't offer a genuine co-op mode considering that many of the stages feature at least one other character alongside Nate. Instead there are a selection of one-off maps that up to three players can enjoy. The competitive multiplayer modes however build upon the enjoyable gameplay mechanics, with an impressive list of eight game types covering the classic multiplayer modes (Deathmatch, Elimination, King of the Hill, etc...) along with a Machinima mode that allows you to record and playback the action.
