but all of the media stuff still feels a bit like empty padding and a few scenes for the podium wouldn't go amiss. And finally, loading times are very, very long (we're talking '90s Champ Man games long, but thankfully with equal reward for your patience).

Couple this with the usual ensemble of car-related tinkery available in the (revamped) garage, and a new team-feedback system - which informs you what's happening elsewhere on the track as you race - and you have a much deeper driving experience than what was on offer last year. Even annoying things like mechanical break-downs contribute to the authenticity of the experience, forcing you to pay attention to that technician jabbering away in your ear.

The first order of business here has clearly been a spoonful of cement, because F1 2011 has hardened up significantly. F1 2010 was cruel on the uninitiated. F1 2011 is downright merciless.

However, F1 has a problem that’s perhaps bigger than that faced by any of those aforementioned franchises. Last year’s outing for rather good for a debut, especially when you consider the complexities and subtleties of Formula 1 racing. F1 2010 was a game that highlighted the skills of those involved and set the bar sky high for anything they put their hand to thereafter. Admittedly it’s a good problem to have, but a problem that still needs to be conquered.
