Obsidian Wants to Make Knights of the Old Republic III for Next-Gen

December 18, 2012 by Alex Co

Obsidian Entertainment, developers of Alpha Protocol and Fallout: New Vegas, wants to make Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for next-gen platforms.

In news that people are hoping will come true or not, depending on their point-of-view of the studio, Obsidian Entertainment's Feargus Urquhart admits that their dream project is developing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic III for next-gen platforms.

For those not old enough to remember, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which was developed by BioWare, is still widely considered to be the best Star Wars game ever made. Its sequel, Knights of the Old Republic II, which was made by Obsidian, wasn't met as warmly due to bugs and missing content among other things. In saying that, KoToR II still is/was a solid game.

In an interview with Kotaku, Urquhart talks about Knights of the Old Republic III and how gamers would be disappointed if it never got made.

I think doing something like that on [Orbis and Durango] and things like that might be—I would be disappointed as a gamer if that never got made…I think a lot of gamers would be disappointed as well.

While Obsidian struck gold with their Neverwinter Night games, most people still see them as the studio that released Alpha Protocol and Fallout: New Vegas. Not saying they're bad games, but for those who've played 'em, you have to admit, it could use an exterminator or two for the in-game bugs.

Currently, Obsidian is finishing South Park: The Stick of Truth for THQ, and is also developing their crowd-funded RPG Project Eternity, which managed to break their Kickstarter goal.

So, would you want Obsidian to make Knights of the Old Republic III or would you rather it be handled by another studio? As someone who played and enjoyed KoToR II a fair bit, I wouldn't mind Obsidian taking on development duties again. Hopefully this time they can right some of the wrongs the last sequel made.

I suggest reading up on the whole interview, as Urquhart discusses and reveals what went wrong with KoToR II, their thoughts on Alpha Protocol and even read up on some of their cancelled projects, too.
