The Pokemon Company Explains Why Pokemon X and Y are Not Coming to the Wii U

January 9, 2013 by Alex Co

Curious why Pokemon X and Y aren’t coming to the Wii U? Here’s the reason…

Yesterday, Nintendo hosted its first-ever Nintendo Direct for 2013; and in it, the publisher revealed Pokemon X and Y is coming to the 3DS in October.

If you're like me, chances are you were caught a bit off-guard as to why this new generation of Pokemon games has been announced for the 3DS, but not for the Wii U. And it's not like the Wii U is swimming in exclusive games now, too.

In an interview with Game Informer, the Pokemon Company International's director of consumer marketing, J.C. Smith, explains why…or at least partially.

I can’t speak to the specifics, but traditionally Game Freak has always loved the game to be on a portable device because of the communication, trading, and the experience of taking this adventure with you. That’s why they’ve always prioritized a portable version of the game first. They’ve always liked what you can do in the real world with that.

Not counting Pokemon Snap for the Nintendo 64, Smith was also asked why we still haven't seen a console version of Pokemon.

It comes down to what the creators want to do. Every time I’ve heard them talk about it, it’s been about the portable experience, taking the adventure with you, being able to share it with friends, communicate, trade, battle – really encouraging that interaction.

There you have it, folks. So if you want to play Pokemon X and Y, better have a 3DS. Of course, this doesn't mean the Wii U will never see a Pokemon game. Who knows? Maybe Nintendo and Game Freak are developing on now right as I write this. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Would you want a Pokemon game on the Wii U or should the franchise stay as a portable franchise?

Thanks, ONM
