Lightning returns, and oh boy does she return in a whole new set of screenshots for Square Enix's upcoming game, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.
The new screenshots showcase some exceptionally large vistas which players, as Lightning, will be able to traverse through. These include deserts filled with ancient ruins and varied cityscapes. In one of the screenshots, she even goes to battle against what appears to be a giant sand wyrm.
In these screens, Lightning is depicted in an array of different armor and clothing which she will be able to acquire throughout the game. Unlike previous games in the series, which had only static outfits for the characters, Lightning Returns will allow players to properly customize Lightning's equipment and gear, in addition to skills.

Focusing mainly on the series' protagonist Lightning, as opposed to multiple different characters, Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be out for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the third quarter this year.
