Cancelled Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun Concept Art Discovered

June 19, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

We won’t ever see this game launch on a console, but that doesn’t mean we can’t stare at some art for it.

Plenty of people want more Legacy of Kain. It may not be a franchise with true universal appeal, but there’s a vocal chunk of the gaming community that’s hungry for a new action-adventure title set in this dark universe. Square Enix recently confirmed the existence of a fresh game in the series titled “Nosgoth,” but soon added that the game will not be "a traditional" installment in the franchise. However, it looks as if a sequel that did follow the basic Legacy of Kain tropes, called “Dead Sun,” was being worked on for some time.

Why haven’t we heard or seen anything concrete about it? A member of NeoGaf with the username Monkeythumbz recently wrote an extended post about how the game was cancelled before it could get off the ground. This particular person knows quite a bit about the project because he or she is a community manager for Square Enix London.

“I know it’s disappointing to hear about these things out of context, and whilst some of the details released are accurate – some details are not,” the post reads. “You know game projects can be cancelled for a variety of different reasons and I know it’s very hard to tell from images and info alone, but in the end LoK: Dead Sun just wasn’t the right game, at the right time… but you’ll have to take me at my word on that, I’m afraid.”

Plenty of concept art was included in the post, showing some unique characters that we’ll never get to see in action. It’s sad, but at least we’ll witness Legacy of Kain return in some form.

“As you’ll be aware, we’re currently working on a multiplayer game firmly set within the Legacy of Kain universe called Nosgoth, which we’re very proud of,” the post continues. “It’s grown in size and scope since its initial conception and we’ll be talking more about it in the future. While we’re not working on a single-player Legacy of Kain game right now, that doesn’t mean it’s not something we’d look at making in the future.”
