Developers to Release New Playable Characters for Mortal Kombat

April 19, 2011

Netherrealm announced that it plans to release new playable characters into the game in the form of DLCs.

The Mortal Kombat reboot may be the best title in the series, and its developers at Netherrealm intend on keeping the game alive well beyond the release with the addition of new DLC characters.

Speaking to CVG, the developer stated that the new add-ons wouldn’t be limited to simple costume or stage additions, and would actually have “all the good stuff” that one could expect from full fledged characters.

The new characters are expected to have their own fighting styles, unique moves and fatalities.

Two characters they plan to add include Kenshi, whom players will recognize from previous games, and a female ninja named Scarlet.

"Anyone who knows the history of Mortal Kombat will tell you that back in the days of the arcade – when they did just palette swap characters to come up with multiple fighters in the game – there was a glitch in one of the old arcade machines that caused the Jade/Katana/Milena female ninja to glitch and turn red.

"People always thought it was a hidden unlockable character and it wasn't, it was purely a programming glitch. They've always speculated and in fact it was the fans who named her Scarlet to begin with. She's no longer a glitch – she's an actual character, and she'll be coming pretty soon post-launch."

They also plan to add Kintaro to the list of playable characters, and the company says it will continue to develop DLCs for the game for “as long as people are playing it.”
