Nvidia DSR Tech Now Available On GeForce GTX 400, 500, 600, 700, And 900 Cards

October 23, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Playing games in 4K in even the more modest Nvidia rigs are now just an install and a button click away.

Nvidia has released a new feature that will make many GTX card owners very happy.

DSR, or Dynamic Super Resolution, is a downsampling technology that allows you to get a sharper image from your PC efficiently and without much set up. It was originally released with the GTX 970 and 980, allowing computers to create 4K quality graphics on any HD screen. Games that can run 4k will be rendered at that resolution, and then filtered down to your monitor’s resolution size.

At 4K, graphics are rendered in such a fine detail that antialiasing and other graphics effects used to make games look better become unnecessary. Even if your monitor cannot render 4K natively, or do it justice, there are definite benefits to having games run at this resolution.

Usually, setting up downsampling requires a lot of effort. However, Nvidia has released new DSR software bundled with its Game Ready 344.48 WHQL drivers.  With these new drivers, any GeForce card in the GTX 400, 500, 600, 700, or 900 series can use DSR with one button press.

After you’ve installed the update, you can enable DSR by clicking the wrench icon in the GeForce Experience windows. There are additional options for scaling and softening the image.

If there are any possible setbacks, they would be concerns with HUD and UI not scaling appropriately. If you’re lucky, your game will resize automatically. Some games require you adjust the options, such as World of Warcraft. Others will need file code modifications, and in the worst case scenario, you may have to talk to the developer.

You can see a tech demo of GeForce’s DSR tech in the video above.
