Every Sonic fan knows that mainline Sonic the Hedgehog installments are developed by a subsidiary of Sega called Sonic Team, while most spin-offs and side projects are developed by third-party sudios. It seems that, despite the Sonic series' questionable quality throughout the years, we still consider Sonic Team to be the team we rest our hopes on. Maybe its next game will be the one to put the blue rodent back on top!
I don't think Sonic Runners will be that game. Announced at Sega's Joypolis amusement center in Tokyo, Sonic Runners is the newest Sonic title being handled directly by Sonic Team. Is this the follow-up to Sonic Lost World? The next-generation project for PS4 and Xbox One? Naw. It's a smartphone game, and from the clearly placeholder name, it sounds like an auto-running platformer.
Aside from a tentative release date in 2015, there have been no further details shared, but I wouldn't expect this game to make any huge waves. The silver lining here is that, because our expectations for Sonic Runners are so low, no one is likely to be crushed when the game fails to meet those expectations.
