In a blue post made over at the EU Battle.net forums, Blizzard announced that all of the character models and assets from Warcraft III were now available to use on the StarCraft II PTR. Modders within the development community for the StarCraft II 'Arcade' now have access to an unprecedented amount of assets, a total of over three thousand materials to work with in their own projects.
The update includes new hero models for each of the four races in WarCraft III, in addition to all of the original models, ambient sounds, structures, spell effects and custom user interfaces.
With the release of these updated assets, Blizzard will be doing a spotlight on the most popular content called 'Memories of War' with the intent to encourage players to use these new additions in their own Arcade modifications on StarCraft II. According to the same post, Blizzard want to see classic, pivotal moments in Warcraft history recreated in StarCraft II.
Suffice to say, it's an exciting prospect to see what the community can come up with, and I for one am certainly looking forward to witnessing some of the most iconic scenes in Warcraft III given new life. Perhaps we'll get to see an updated rendition of the conclusion of the Second War from Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness? Or even the opening of the Dark Portal when the orcish horde arrived in Azeroth? The possibilities are endless.
This follows the earlier speculation that the upcoming standalone expansion, StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, releases this year.
