Homeworld Remastered Collection Beginners Guide

February 26, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

This guide runs down the nuances of controls to make the game immediately accessible.

Did you buy Homeworld Remastered Collection? Playing Homeworld for the first time? Both Homeworld 1 and 2 are now more than a decade old, so gameplay might still be solid, but most new players wouldn’t even know about its nuances.

As this fan has pointed out, what may seem unintuitive on the surface will be easy to get into once you know what you’re doing. With this in mind, here are some basic tips for beginners.

·         Hold the right mouse button to rotate the camera.

·         Press spacebar OFTEN for the sensors manager.

·         Keep the camera centered on one ship or a group of ships at any given time. Panning the camera down as you usually would in a top down RTS will just make you lose the camera in space.

·         Assign groups to your ships and use them.

·         Use the multiple ways available to move ships. Move a fighter squadron to a nearby object by right clicking it. If it’s far away, use the sensors manager.

·         You can right click a nearby hostile unit to attack it. However, the easiest way to attack something is to draw an attack box around it. Hold the Ctrl key and drag it to the target.

·         If you want to move to an empty area of space, press M to bring up the movement disc and click on the target. The movement disc will also allow you to choose X and Y coordinates, to move in 3D space.

·         Press J for hyperspace jumps.

·         Press W to assign waypoints.

·         Press S to quickly make a ship stop whatever it is doing.

·         Pressing H will make your resource collectors harvest the closest minerals to their current location.

·         Probes and gun platforms can only be moved once. Choose where they are positioned carefully, since they will give you information about the enemy.

·         Scouts aren't good at combat, but they are fast and have a larger sensor range than interceptors. You can also use them as bait.

·         Retiring ships refunds a portion of its cost.
