Proteus is Bound for Late October Steam Release

September 8, 2012 by Kris Ligman

Big beta update adds two New Game Plus features.

You may have heard about Proteus, which is what happens when you put Minecraft and Love together in a blender and then pour it through an Atari 2600 strainer over some ice and gin. It's sort of a music game, or perhaps an exploration game, but neither of those things entirely describe it. Like Love, words and screenshots do not do Proteus justice, but not to worry: Proteus is headed to Steam in a mere matter of weeks. And until then, you can enjoy the all-new additions to its beta mode.

New features for the beta include new creatures and musical systems and, most notably, two New Game Plus features which activate after your first playthrough. The first is a "wild" island producing "some dramatic visual differences" and the second is a "postcard rack" for viewing ingame screenshots, which includes world and location data so you can "regenerate" the scene on the fly.

You can purchase and download the Proteus beta from its official website, and keep an eye out for a specific release date as we hurtle inexorably toward October.
